At Blue Ivey School, we believe in hands-on learning experiences that not only engage our students but also teach them important life skills. Last week, we were thrilled to welcome the Garland Fire Department for our annual Fire Safety Day, an event our children look forward to every year. This exciting visit offered our preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students an up-close look at fire safety and the vital work of our local firefighters.
Learning Important Fire Safety Lessons
The children were all ears as firefighters explained when to call 911, demonstrated how to ‘Stop, Drop, and Roll,’ and highlighted the importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed to prevent the spread of smoke in case of a fire. Our students were especially excited to practice what they learned during a school-wide fire drill, showcasing their new skills and understanding of fire safety.
Exploring the Fire Truck
One of the highlights of the day was, of course, the opportunity to sit inside the fire truck. Our students’ eyes lit up with excitement as they climbed aboard, got a peek at the tools and equipment firefighters use, and learned about the importance of teamwork in emergency situations. It’s always a fun and educational experience when the Garland Fire Department comes to visit, and this year was no exception.
Here are some moments from our Fire Safety Day with the Garland Fire Department:
Bringing Fire Safety Home
Fire safety doesn’t stop at school—it’s important for families to reinforce these lessons at home. Here are a few simple but essential tips you can practice with your child to keep your home fire-safe:
- Create a fire escape plan: Walk through your home with your child and identify at least two exits for each room. Practice your escape plan regularly so everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.
- Teach children how to use 911: Make sure your child understands when and how to call 911 in an emergency. Role-play different scenarios where they might need to ask for help.
- Check your smoke alarms: Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. Let your child help test them so they can recognize the sound.
- Stop, Drop, and Roll: Reinforce this key fire safety technique at home. Practice with your child so they know what to do if their clothes ever catch fire.
- Keep doors closed at night: Explain to your child why it’s safer to sleep with bedroom doors closed. It can slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving everyone more time to escape.
Help your child remember the fire safety lessons they learned! Ask them these key questions to reinforce what they practiced during our Fire Safety Day.
